Originally built in1720, part of the building was destroyed by fire in 1955. This left a beautiful Georgian building. The Robert Adams Diocletian wing contains a library, orangery (picture gallery) and the Lansdowne marbles in the sculpture gallery. At the east end is the laboratory where Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen gas. Exhibition rooms show Lord Byron’s Albanian dress, watercolours, miniatures and jewellery and paintings by Constable, Gainsborough, Turner. David Roberts, and Edward Lear. The Arcadian and extensive grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown with formal gardens surrounding the house.

restaurant available, at own cost. One course meal, hot or cold for £13.70,
