Cultural Revolution in the Heart of Europe, with Gavin Plumley

During the 19th Century, when the Habsburgs controlled many Central European countries, art and culture were often the only ways in which the Empire’s constituent crownlands could express their national identities. This enthralling study day explores in 3 lectures: The Magic of Prague – beloved of Kings and Princes; A Hungarian Metropolis - the new capital, Budapest, formed in 1873 by the unification of Buda and Pest, situated on either side of the River Danube, finding expression in lavish new buildings, the continent’s first underground railway system, and paintings of significant Hungarian subjects; and Gustav Klimt – imperial muralist turned radical painter, whose sexual themes shocked an unsuspecting populance.
