In 2012 The Arts Society Scarborough held a workshop on a cold Saturday afternoon for seven young people who loved art but did not have the opportunity of practising with a live model and working on an easel in order to produce very large scale charcoal drawings with an established artist
Welcome to The Arts Society Scarborough - which covers coast and country
We have recently changed our venue to the Scarborough Rugby Club, Scalby Road, Scalby.
The Arts Society Scarborough is just one branch of a national organisation, The Arts Society. The society was formed to bring together people interested in the arts, who wished to see and hear inspiring and beautifully illustrated lectures from experts, to visit museums, galleries, historic houses and gardens, and to increase and broaden their knowledge of art in all respects, whilst having fun, learning new skills and making new friends. 2023 marked the 40th anniversary of the founding of our Society.
We meet on the third Wednesday of each month ( except for July, August and December) in the function suite of the Scarborough Rugby Club for lectures on a wide range of artistic subjects from experienced and knowledgeable lecturers. Details of our lectures are shown in the Events section of this website.
During the warmer months of the year, we organise trips and outings to places of artistic and cultural interest. In 2023 we have organised visits to Shibden Hall and Allerton Castle. We are planning a visit to the Auckland Project for 2024.
Where possible, we aim to support arts in the wider community. Our Young Arts projects are supporting Scarborough Hospital with a variety of art materials for the Children’s Ward and we have also supported Art Therapy Yorkshire.
