When a Society offers a grant to a school, there is often an element of concern, whether the aims of the donation will be met. The enthusiastic response of the Head at Walton C of E Primary School, Somerset, Rachel Toal and the Art teacher, Cathy Woodroffe left little doubt. A whole week was devoted to intensive art activities in various novel media, with 2 professional artists coming in and gifted parents sharing their skills in different art forms.
The results were impressive in different ways. All 150 children were involved and produced work in charcoal, wire sculpture, tile printing, clay and acrylic paints…and dance. They expressed their pride in their achievements but also showed a confidence about trying new media in the future. The school’s art exhibition was open to admiring parents, before and aftere school, who continued to view it over several days.
This relatively small donation was spent in a way that amply demonstrated the aims of The Arts Society; promotion of aesthetic education and the cultivation, appreciation and study of the arts.
