Giuseppe Garibaldi was praised for his military genius, his courage, and his charisma. Known as the "Hero of Two Worlds," Garibaldi's military prowess extended to the Americas, where he played a major role in the Brazilian struggle for independence. During his fight for Italian unification Garibaldi personally led an army of local untrained rebels to victory in Palermo, Naples, and Sicily. His forces suffered from lack of equipment, food, and money, and yet Garabaldi commanded their fierce loyalty. Christopher Hibbert reveals how this iconic figure earned the adulation of not only his fellow Italians, but people across the globe.
Up and coming Lecture - 7 April 2022
The Queen of Instruments: The Lute within Old Masters Paintings
The lute holds a special place in the history of art: painters of the Italian Renaissance depicted golden-haired angels plucking its delicate strings, evoking celestial harmony; in the sixteenth century, during the rise of humanism, the lute was a becoming pastime of educated courtiers, as depicted by the likes of Holbein and Titian; throughout the seventeenth century, the instrument continued to play a key role in emphasising the intimate, debauched and transient pleasures of interior scenes by Jan Steen and portraits by Frans Hals. This lecture looks at the lute, and other musical instruments, as devices to express various aspects of the human character throughout the ages.

ANCHOR STUDIO VISIT
Renee Spierdijk, Artist in Residence, The Anchor Studio, Newlyn
- Photo's Samme Charlesworth 2022Sixteen TASWC members battled the gales to visit The Anchor Studio in February - clearly there is no stopping our West Cornwall Arts Society Members! We were Joined by Chris Hibbert (Director); Renee Spierdijk (Artist in Residence) and Rolfe Kentish (Conservation Architect) who talked about the history of the studio and how the restoration took place. We loved the sensitive restoration, the sense of place and the special interwoven connection to the artists past, present and now future. Another local treasure.VISIT TO ST. HILARY'S CHURCH
A most interesting and informative talk given by Owen Baker, with the primary speaker being our very own Carrie Baker. Carrie pointed out how very lucky the church was to have so many works of art. The collection was started in the 1920s by Father Bernard Walke and his artist wife Ann (or Annie) after the church burnt down. Both Bernard and Anne became close friends with the later Newlyn group of artists and invited them to do paintings in the church so it has work by Ernest & Dod Procter, Harold Harvey, Alethea Garstin and her father Norman, Gladys Hynes and Phyllis Yglesias the sculptress that adorn the building today. There is also a work by Roger Fry of St Francis and a number by Ann Walke herself. Harold and Laura Knight were also close friends of the Walkes and Bernard said he kept cavey for Laura when she painted outdoors near the coast during WWI, painting outside being a forbidden activity. We we lucky to have a blast from the magnificent church organ played by David Ball and the most delicious tea with home baked biscuits. The church is open if you want to pop in.
