77 members and guests enjoyed Carles Jiménez's fascinating lecture about the complexities and intrigues of Diego Velázquez’s masterpiece, 'Las Meninas'.
An enigmatic group portrait of sorts, 'Las Meninas' is populated by an odd cast of characters, including a princess, a nun, a dwarf, and the artist himself. A stark divergence from traditional royal portraiture, many have likened the painting to a snapshot, in the sense that it packs in a wealth of action. At the same time, close examination reveals that it doesn’t seem to follow the rules of perspective. Without clear evidence of the artist’s intentions or the wishes of his patron, viewers and historians alike are mostly left with theories and unanswerable questions.
Many thanks to Carles for his insight into this amazing work of art and for answering some of those questions.
Details of our other lectures for this year can be found via the Events link at the bottom of this page. Event booking forms can also be found on the links to each event.

We really are overwhelmed with the interest and support we have received - a massive thanks to you all.
We now have 86 members, which is incredible for such a small island, and so we have to close membership for the time being.
Obviously, we will now be looking at ways as to how we can organise the Society to enable us to reopen the membership list; we will keep you informed. For those of you who are interested in joining the Society, we have a waiting list. If you would like more information, please email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
We want the Society to be a place to meet people and make friends, as well as one of learning. In addition to lectures, we plan to organize art based visits, walks, and social events.
