A Lecture by Pepe Martinez on 9 October 2024 @ The Arts Society Horsham
In this visually stimulating lecture, Pepe Martinez guided us on a kind of psychedelic journey from The Capitol Theatre in Horsham to the Subway of New York, the streets of London, Paris and Berlin. We got to know the lingo, the history and the techniques of graffiti art and the names that rose to fame such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat whose death at aged 27 bestowed his iconic status.
After the summer break, members of The Arts Society Horsham were eager to start their new membership year and were treated to a most fascinating lecture on two major international art collections: the Wallace Collection at Hertford House, London and the Frick Collection in New York. The lecturer Hilary Williams, illustrated their intriguing connections and their link to Knole, the ancestral home of the Sackville family in Kent.
Towards the end of August a group of our members enjoyed an excellent coach trip to Saffron Walden.
In the morning we visited the fascinating Fry Art Gallery, where we had a private visit with an interesting talk about the history of the gallery and its extensive art collection.
Following the art gallery our coach transported us to the spectacular early 17th century mansion Audley End. Here, in glorious sunshine, we had the opportunity to explore the lovely gardens and the fascinating house.
The Arts Society Appleby in Westmorland were delighted to sponsor the children of Great Asby Endowed School with their project to dress Saint Helen's Well in Great Asby. This tradition has its roots in ancient pagan rituals and involved creating intricate art work on wooden frames adorned with natural materials. After a week of preparation the children invited friends and villagers for a blessing led by Reverend Francis and celebratory hymns. The event concluded with a lovely afternoon tea at the school prepared by the children.
Felicity Sykes and Charlotte Carpenter of The Arts Society Chiltern Hills Area visited Bishopsland on the 5th February 2024 for the annual competition for awards. They were joined by Jane Mackay from Chalfont Fine Arts Society and Marilyn Sturgeon from The Arts Society Henley.
The students gave a presentation showing their designs with drawings and maquettes. The two best designs won an award from TASCHA to enable them to buy the silver to make their designs.
The first award of £500 went to Sarah Wilmot for her Sterling Silver and Scottish Oak modular candlesticks
