We have organised a special ‘Behind the Scenes Tour’ at Raby Castle. This will be with a senior guide, into the heart of the castle and its history; unlocking some of the hidden treasurers not usually seen by the public. The group will be no more than 15, and will go down narrow passages within the walls, there is a spiral staircase (with no railing) and some of the floors are uneven; because of this it may be unsuitable for some people. The tour will be 2 hours and include welcome refreshments. After the tour your ticket will give you access to the rest of the public rooms in the castle, the Walled Garden and Deer Park. We will meet for this tour at the Round House inside the main gate (well signed) at 10.15am. It is suggested flat shoes and warm clothing are worn. The cost is £20.
For those who would like to join us for the day, but not the Behind the Scenes Tour, there is much to do and see, including the Castle’s Main Rooms (open from 11am), Walled Garden, Stables exhibition, shop and Deer Park. The cost is £15.
There is a wonderful café at the Vinery open for everyone from 10am; there are picnics places should you want to bring your own. The car park is near the entrance, free and open from 9.50am. The Castle and grounds close at 4pm.
Because Raby Castle is so local to us, we are not organising a bus, and ask you to make your own way there, and maybe offer lifts. Please arrive promptly as the tour starts before the public have access. Address DL2 3AH, off A688, North of Staindrop.
