Guided Tour in English

THE ARTS SOCIETY THE HAGUE

Most kindly invites you to join us for a Special Event

On Sunday 27th October 2024 at 11.00 hrs. to

'Joan MIRÓ  -  Sculptures'

at the Museum Beelden aan Zee, Scheveningen

*  I.e. that's meetup at the museum by 10.45.

The museum's position close to the sea is a very fitting location to display the sculptures created by the world-famous, Catalan artist Joan Miró (1893-1983), in that the natural objects, he found on the beach in his beloved hometown of Barcelona fostered his love for sculpture.

In close collaboration with the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona, and leading museum partners, public as well as private collections, no less than 55 large and small sculptures will be on display.

The exhibits highlight his experiments with all kinds of materials and his ever-present quest for new ideas, materials, and techniques.  Joan Miró is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

He is generally best known for his paintings, but his artistic work encompasses a broad range of styles and mediums ranging from paper drawing and printmaking to ceramics and sculpture.  The artist was very prolific (between 1966-1983 he created over 300 bronzes) and inventive too, he held a lifelong love of experimenting with materials and processes, thereby creating a unique style, which many artists still follow years after his death.

How Miró did that, he explains in a letter to Pierre Matisse dated 28th September 1936:
'You speak to me of my objects and ask how I conceive them. I never think about it in advance.  I feel myself attracted by a magnetic force toward an object, and then I feel myself being drawn toward another object which is added to the first, and their combination creates a poetic shock – not to mention their original formal impact – which makes the poetry truly moving, and without which it would have no effect.'
