A visit to explore the treasures held at St Mary's Church, North Mymms
First mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, North Mymms was the property of Robert, Bishop of Chester, although no trace of a church of that time has been found. The present-day church has its origins in the early 14th century, while the tower was built sometime between 1430 and 1450.
The building contains some wonderful treasures, from 16th century altar tombs and beautiful silver chalices to modern day stained glass. Sir Thomas More wrote some of ‘Utopia’ in the parish, while the churchyard contains some fascinating gravestones and memorials.
The Arts Society Welwyn Garden’s Church Recorder group completed a record of church furnishings at St Mary’s in 1996, and TASWG is in the early stages of exploring a return to the church to do further Church Recording work. This pop-up trip will be of particular interest to any TASWG member interested in this opportunity.
