Young Arts Project

4 Nov 2019 - 12:41 BY Jean Steward, Co-Chair and Publicity Officer

The Arts Society Wensum has a four year project, working with The Norwich Puppet Theatre and Wensum Junion School.  In the past three years we have helped to fund sessions with Year 3 pupils working as "Young Artists" on three different topics.  In 2017 there was an African theme, leading to a performance for parents and the whole school.  In 2018 there was Project Circus 250, celebrating the 250 year anniversary of circuses, when the children put on a performance at the Puppet Theatre and also paraded in the Norwich Lord Mayor's Procession.  The theme in 2019 was the Norwich Lord Mayor's carnival theme ‘love the world around you’; showcasing the natural world and the things we can do to help protect it.  A proposal for the current year is under active discussion with the Puppet Theatre, and may centre around making and using puppets to help infants/juniors improve their reading skills.

Norwich is fortunate to be the home of one of only three puppet theatres in Britain, so we are delighted to be able to support their work with young people.  Zara Goodfellow, Creative Learning Coordinator from The Norwich Puppet Theatre has led the work with the Year 3 students, The value of engaging children in creative, stimulating and meaningful opportunties to work with puppetry in creative, stimulating and meaningful allows them to develop confidence in themselves and their abilities.
