Visit to Kino-Teatr, Jerwood & De La Warr Galleries

The Arts Society Eastbourne’s first event of 2018, organised by Kate Liddiard, has been a visit to 3 local galleries in Bexhill, St Leonard’s, and Hastings.
Our first gallery was at the Kino-Teatre in St Leonards where we were hosted by the proprietor Russell Baker whose great interest is Russian art, as a collector, an exhibitor and a dealer. His stories of early travel in Russia were fascinating.
We then continued to Hastings and the Jerwood Gallery located in the Old Town area near fishing boats and iconic fisherman’s tall huts. The Gallery was holding an exhibition of the works of the Portuguese artist, Paula Rego, entitled “The Boy who loved the Sea and Other Stories”. The art spans many decades, much of it telling stories, from the exile of the Portuguese King to, most recently, some self-portraits following an accident when Paula badly damaged her face.
Our final visit was to the Art Deco De La war Pavilion in Bexhill. A sculpture by Roy Voss, “The Way Things Are” was on display. Additionally, there was an exhibition called “Love Life” by Jonathan Baldock and Emma Hart who humorously imagine a Punch-and-Judy booth as their home.
