ST MICHAEL’S, THEYDON MOUNT
CHURCH OPEN WEEKEND and VIEWING of HATCHMENT RESTORATION
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September 2021
This Grade I Jacobean church is rarely open to the public except at service times. Built in 1614, the interior is largely original. Its 400-year links with nearby Hill Hall have resulted in a remarkable collection of monuments and memorials to the Smyth family. Amongst these is one of the most important groups of Georgian funeral hatchments in Essex, and a George III Royal Coat of Arms.
Until recently, they were in poor condition and in some cases near collapse, so an appeal was launched to save them. Thanks to the generosity of many donors and grant-giving bodies, they have now been magnificently restored.
We would like to celebrate the completion of their conservation, and to enable more people to view the hatchments and the many other historic features of this Grade I Jacobean church.
Please join us if you can – all welcome.
