TAS South Cambs support a day of music a Sawston College
1 May 2024
The Arts Society South Cambs used their Community Grant to support musical workshops and concerts for pupils at neighbouring Sawston Village College. Five musicians from the Grand Union Orchestra visited the college in March this year and provided 425 pupils with a musical experience they will never forget!
The first concert of the day was for pupils in years 5 and 6 from two local primary schools who thoroughly enjoyed music provided by musicians from Australia, Bangladesh, China, Uruguay and Jamaica/Switzerland.
The first concert was followed by a workshop for 35 pupils studying music GCSE in years 10 and 11. The musicians played a diverse range of instruments from around the world demonstrating how different cultures can work together to produce beautiful music – something that is very much at the centre of the Grant Union Orchestra’s ethos. One of the pupils attending commented that the workshop “was a truly unique and enhancing experience…We walked away as more mindful musicians and richer human beings.”
The Grand Union Orchestra finished the day with a concert for year 7 pupils who are currently completing their Bronze Arts Award. The pupils heard music and instruments from around the world and were encouraged to clap to the beat and dance. Afterwards the pupils each wrote a review of the concert. They all agreed that they had found it inspirational and eager to experience more of the arts such as a theatre performance or exhibition.
Thanks to the generosity of The Arts Society South Cambs these young people have formed a love of the arts that will last with them for the rest of their lives.
But don’t take our word for it! Take a look at the films made on the day!
