Sussex Art Venues
6 May 2023
We are keen to support local art venues in Sussex and on March 5th we visited Ditchling Museum. The CEO Steph Fuller gave a very interesting talk about the history of the museum and how Ditchling became an artistic centre..
It was this developement that led Shoji Hamada to come to the village from Japan and Steph explained more about the potter's life and work.
We all enjoyed viewing the exhibtion, A Japanese Potter in Ditchling. It also included a short film narrated by Bernard Leech so we could gain an insight into Shoji's life in Japan as well.
The visit was complemented by coffee and tea served with delicious homemade cake!
A few weeks later a group met at Pallant House Gallery.
Our guide Liz gave a fascinating insight into the exhibition - Sussex Landscape: Chalk, Wood and Water. This was the first major exhibition to celebrate Sussex as a place of inspiration for artists and encompassed print, sculpture, photography and digital works.
Liz hightlighted various pieces in different mediums and from varying periods. She added humour and insight to their stories. We certainly did see Sussex as we had never seen it before.
