SUMMER 2022 NEWSLETTER

I am writing this newsletter surrounded by boxes as we are moving house next week and I wanted to get in touch before we move as I might not be able to find the laptop for a while afterwards!

My email address , rmorrisivy@gmail.com and mobile phone number, 07503658523 will remain the same so please use these if you need to contact me.

This style of email newsletter is something of an experiment so please let Jane or Myra know if it is easier for you to access than when it is sent as an attachment.

(jane – knole@the artssociety.org) (myra – allanandmyradet@aol.comFUTURE LECTURE DATES & INFORMATION

There will be several necessary changes during the next season of lecture meetings which I hope you will all embrace. The biggest change is that the

October meeting, on 20th October, 2022 will NOT be at The Bat & Ball Centre.

It will be at 1.30 at Wildernesse House. Wildernesse Avenue, Sevenoaks, TN15 0EA

We are delighted to have been invited by Elysian Residences to hold our lecture on 20th October in the elegant Great Hall of the recently refurbished Wildernesse House.

  • ·  The lecture that day is by Alexandra Epps, an excellent

accredited lecturer. Her talk is called, “PEGGY GUGGENHEIM. Poor little rich girl who changed the face of 20th Century art.”

  • ·  The hall will be fully equipped with a large screen, microphones and chairs.

  • ·  Easy parking with a manned large car park.

  • ·  There will be a glass wine on arrival and the restaurant can be booked for lunch before the lecture which will start at 2pm.

  • ·  Residents and guests will be invited to join us for the lecture and to hear more about our society. Knole members & guests will be invited for a tour of the residences if they wish..

  • ·  For more details about the recently refurbished residences at Wildernesse House, including location, contact details and menu for the restaurant please see www.wildernessehouse.com orwww.elysian.com

Of course, before October, we have a meeting in September at the Bat & Ball Centre as usual. THE DATE IS INCORRECT ON THE PROGRAMME LEAFLET.

IT WILL BE at 13.45 ON THURSDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER, the third Thursday as usual.

PLEASE JOIN US AT THE BAT & BALL CENTRE, SEVENOAKS FOR OUR LECTURE ON THURSDAY 15th September. OUR ACCLAIMED ACCREDITED LECTURER IN SEPTEMBER IS PEPE MARTINEZ. His fascinating subject is ‘Bombing with Banksy and Co. The Street Art of Shoreditch and Spitalfields. We had a really successful society visit 5 years ago and had a guided tour of this area looking at the different examples of street art

We will be providing wine and elderflower for you to purchase at £2 a glass, and of course there will be our usual raffle to provide funds to support our Young Arts Programme. Please come and bring a guest.

In our last newsletter, I mentioned that our numbers are down and we are now actively looking at ways we can increase our membership and reduce our overheads. Equally important is a shortage of new committee members who are willing to take on these roles.

We realise that everyone is busy and would therefore ask if any of you would like to share a role on the committee or just volunteer to help on a less permanent basis then please consider getting in touch.

For example, we would welcome help on a rota system of people to assist on the welcome desk, selling raffle tickets and providing refreshments. All excellent ways of chatting with members and guests. Volunteers are also required to help with publicity, and promotion. This could be as a one off or on an infrequent but regular basis. The society is run by members who are all volunteers and without you we don’t have a society.

EXHIBITIONS AT THE V&A MUSEUM

Last week I took my 14 year old granddaughter to see the Africa Fashion exhibition and the Beatrix Potter exhibition at the V&A. We had a great day out and I thoroughly enjoyed showing her some of the delights of the museum again. As usual, both exhibitions were well curated, very informative and visually stunning. She has chosen to do

art and Textiles at GCSE next year and one of her holiday projects is to visit a couple of exhibitions. I am very thrilled to welcome her to my world of fascination with fashion and textiles.

If you are even vaguely interested in textiles this exhibition is a feast of colour and texture.

Then of course, who can resist the fascinating story of Beatrix Potter with her interest in the natural world , especially fungi. And, did you know that Beatrix Potter studied drawing at The V&A?

FINALLY

Enjoy the summer break and we look forward to seeing all of you in September for a season of great lectures. Bring your friends and think about volunteering to help keep ASKnole a viable society.

Best wishes
