Tuesday 18th May 2021: Monica Bohm-Duchen: "The Lure of the Mediterranean, the Art ofbthe South of France".
Many visual artists have been drawn to the Mediterranean coast of France: Claude Monet in Antibes in 1888; and in the same year, Van Gogh who persuaded Gaugin - with disastrous results - to join him in Arles. Cezanne's roots lay in the Midi to which he returned in 1899. In 1892 Paul Signac sailed into St Tropez, settling there and attracting many younger artists. Renoir would make the Midi his home, as would Bonnard and Matisse. After the Second World War, so too would Picasso and Chagall.
November 2021 Sian Walter will lead a Study Day on Caravaggio -2021 being the 450th anniversary of his birth. Full details later...
