Snowdrop Sunday at Guisborough Priory

Snowdrop Sunday at Guisborough Priory

4 Feb 2026

Thomas Girton, an exact contemporary of Turner, made sketches of the ruins of Guisborough Priory in 1801/02. The dramatic skelton, an outstanding example of 14th century Gothic architecture, is the east end of one of the earliest Augustinian priories in England.  Girton's paintings add drama by emphasising the verticality of the architecture silhouetted against the sky.   The Priory is in the care of English Heritage and is managed by Gisborough Priory Project.  The images are of a watercolour held by Tate Britain and an oil painting held at Yale University, neither on display.

Guisborough Priory's special out-of-season opening to see the carpets of snowdrops is on Sunday 15 February 13:00 - 15:00.
