After all the excitement and hard work over the last year, 320 children from Minchinhampton Primary Academy in Gloucestershire finally had the party of their lives. The whole town turned out to celebrate the launch of the children’s book A Portal Through Time which the children began this time last year. Visitors looked on in amusement as the books’ main character (A Pig on a Motorbike) wound his way through the market town. Mums, Dads, grandparents, brothers and sisters, watched with pride as each child was given a copy of the book and whole families queued to buy copies for Christmas presents and family mementoes.

The town thronged with people taking part in the fun and games, while others rushed up to the Market Hall where there was an exhibition of the art work done by the youngsters. There were over 300 pictures on show and, as one young mum said ‘my daughter has talked of nothing else over the last year – I don’t think she’s ever going to forget it.’

Talking about the project and the work it involved, West Mercia Young Arts Area Coordinator, Lizzie Brett said ‘this young arts project has motivated the whole town. Yes, the Area and the two Societies (Corinium and Cirencester) provided much of the wherewithal, but the hard work came from the schools’ teachers, the town’s local library and all those dedicated volunteers who helped to organise this fantastic day.’

John Dougherty the children’s author who worked with the youngsters over the last year, spent the afternoon beaming from ear to ear, while their teachers rushed around talking to the VIPs; the children handed out canapes made by their mums and the local media had queues of people waiting to be interviewed. Altogether a wonderful day, one which will certainly go down in the annuls of the school as a truly fantastic day.
