OUR SPONSORED GALLERY APPRENTICE - UPDATE
13 Feb 2020
An update on our financing of a Gallery Apprentice at RURAL ARTS, Thirsk.
In July last year we announced that the Arts Society Hambleton in conjunction with Hambleton DC was financing the employment of a Gallery Apprentice, Laura Wheeler
Delia Madgwick our recently appointed committee member and Young Arts coordinator writes:-
Laura has had experience in aspects of the Arts when she finished school and applied for this opportunity to have more involvement in employment that embraced this interest. I have met with Laura on a number of occasions to discuss her involvement at Rural Arts and her progress with further education running alongside the apprenticeship.
Laura says that her involvement with Rural Arts has given her confidence and a structure to her life. She is loving working in an Arts environment and this opportunity has opened her horizons for the future . We invited Laura along to Solberge Hall for our February lecture. There she met committee members, saw our lectures in action and thoroughly enjoyed the subject of "Conceptual Art"
We plan some more meetings before her apprenticeship comes to an end with the view to encouraging her and helping her plan her future. She is really happy to have this opportunity and talks about her work with a big smile! I will report further on Laura’s progress in due course.
RURAL ARTS (website here)is a Thirsk based charitable organisation which aims to provide creative opportunities in rural North Yorkshire. Founded in 1992 it now has a strong network of community venues and volunteers. The Thirsk Old Courthouse HQ has a shop, cafe and gallery. We offered to help fund a gallery apprentice as one of the diverse things we do as your Arts Society, having previously helped them to purchase display equipment. If you have not been it is worth a visit and perhaps coffee and cake!
