Newsletter August 2020
8 Sep 2020 - 11:16 BY Gill Theaker
The fourth Covid update and we’re still coping with the repercussions! As you know, we had hoped to go ahead as usual with our last lecture of the season on 24th September. However, although most of us would wish to attend and both the lecturer and Susan Levett, our loyal projectionist, are willing to participate, the Angel Centre is still unable to open up the Medway Hall. Unless therefore there is a sudden change, the committee has decided the only option is to proceed with our first Zoom lecture. Once we have finalised arrangements with our lecturer, Andrew Prince, I shall be informing you of the procedure. It would help if those of you willing to participate could register with Zoom if you have not already done so (it’s very straightforward) and we would organise a rehearsal beforehand to ensure familiarity with the technology. Maybe those of you nervous at this prospect (and that includes the committee!) could get together in a small ‘bubble’ to make it a more sociable experience? I realise this is not the ideal way to end our year but it’s the best we can do in the circumstances and the committee would like to thank you for your patience.
As far as this is concerned, all paperwork will be sent out in the normal way and you will be able to vote online or by post. Matters here have been complicated by the unavoidable delays in the auditing of our accounts. For this reason, we will need to send out papers slightly later than usual. There have been a few changes to the committee for the coming year. Julie Kury will take on the role of Membership Secretary, although I’m pleased to say that Anita Hemeon will still be there to greet you on arrival, and Andrea Holt has kindly agreed to be our new Minutes Secretary. Huge thanks also go to Sonia Bryant, who has been booking new speakers and who, together with her husband Richard, attended an online Zoom meeting with other Kent and Sussex societies on the best approach to the now necessary Zoom lectures. We are all beginners in this and it’s been so encouraging for me that no one I have approached for help has said no! If anyone else feels they can help in any way, particularly with technical aspects, do please contact me! We may be one of the smaller societies but your support during these extraordinary times has been invaluable.
The matter of membership fees for the coming season has, of course, already been addressed. Renewals for existing members will be £20 pp, £40 per couple. New members will be charged at the previous rate since they have not lost out this year. To simplify refunds for the cancelled Study Day those affected will pay no membership fee for this year. Non members will receive cheques.
