2018 marks the Golden Jubilee of The Arts Society (formerly NADFAS) and the first of many celebrations to take place during the year was a special event at Leatherhead Theatre. The beginning of January can be a quiet time, but this Sunday the Theatre hosted a sell-out performance of the ground-breaking film Loving Vincent with an Arts Society talk introducing Vincent Van Gogh.
The Arts Society is internationally known for the excellence of its talks and the afternoon began with an illustrated overview of Vincent’s life by popular lecturer, Eveline Eaton. Eveline holds a BA Honours degree from the Courtauld Institute and is an expert on the Impressionists.
Following Eveline’s talk, there was a break for tea and cake, then a presentation of the film “Loving Vincent”, which has received such wide acclaim from the critics. This is the first ever fully painted animated feature film. Each of the film's 65,000 frames, created by a team of 125 painters, is an oil painting on canvas, using the same techniques as Van Gogh. Loving Vincent was awarded the ‘Best Animated Feature Film Award’ at the 2017 European Film Awards in Berlin
June Robinson, President of The Arts Society Leatherhead and National Chairman of the charity said: “this was a very emotional film highlighting the life of the misunderstood genius who was Vincent Van Gogh. As we left to the moving strains of Don McLean’s tribute Starry Starry Night against the background of Vincent’s iconic painting of the same name, we reflected:
And now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free…
All proceeds from the event were donated to The Leatherhead Theatre to support this major Arts venue, which receives no local authority or other funding. It was wonderful to see our Theatre packed to the brim with late bookers queuing in the foyer in the hope of returned tickets and eventually squeezed into seats remaining unused by wheelchairs."
John Andrews, Chairman of The Arts Society Leatherhead, announced their sponsorship of two seats at £50 a seat. This was to mark the Society's 20th anniversary in 2017; John encouraged others to remember someone in this way and also help the Theatre.
