A Wartime Christmas in Cumbria

Church Recorders working at St Michael & All Angels Church in Beetham, Cumbria documented a Christmas crib made by German prisoners of war in a camp near the church. It was given by the prisoners as an expression of gratitude in 1946 to the vicar and congregation for their "spirit of Christian brotherhood". The carved wooden figures are two-dimensional and have a joyous vitality which is remarkable in view of the circumstances they were made in.
