The Arts Society Victoria
The Arts Society Victoria hosts monthly evening lectures at 7pm on the first Tuesday of most months in The Great Hall at The Grey Coat Hospital School, Greycoat Place, London, SW1P 2DY. Doors open at 6.30pm for drinks, lectures are from 7pm-8pm, and they are followed by questions and a chance to meet with other members and guests.
We welcome new members and are a friendly, inviting society. As a member you will enjoy up to ten evening lectures a year running from November to October (lectures are not held in January or August). This GB paint-off pitches together John Constable and L.M.W Turner, comparing their "signature paints", the "technical challenge" of sketching from nature and their respective "showstoppers". But who will ultimately be crowned star painter?
The lecture presents fascinating histories and journeys behind works of art in today's museums, from the 17th century "Gangster Monarch Collectors" to Napolenon's mass removal of Europe's arts to Paris.
Why a cupboard might not be a cupboard; why tills were in rather than on counters and how the chest with drawers became the chest of drawers.
