French and British painters of Normandy in the nineteenth century

From the 1820’s the French provinces Normandy attracted many of the finest British and French painters of the nineteenth century. At first it was British artists, such as Turner, Bonington and Cotman, who were drawn to the area by its coastal scenery, its many fine buildings and its strong historical links to England. Later the French painters, Boudin and Monet) who were both brought up in Normandy) also painted many Norman scenes, particularly the new tourist resorts. This lecture places all these artists in their historical context, and in doing so discusses and illustrates some of Turner and Monet’s most beautiful works.
