Trail of Discovery for the Church of St Philip & St Paul with Wesley, Southport

The Church of St Philip & St Paul with Wesley is a prominent landmark beside one of the major roads into Southport. The Trails of Discovery team was encouraged to create a Church Trail by the Curate and the Methodist Minister, who share the clerical responsibilities, and the headteacher of the adjacent C of E Primary School. The church is interesting and unusual because of the amalgamation of three congregations, one in the Methodist tradition, and as a result of the innovative reordering of the interior of a Victorian building.
Certain features presented themselves as obvious candidates for a trail and the team identified these on the initial visit. One team member is an artist and she created some drawings, others took photographs. We met on about six occasions to discuss the types of question to ask and the accompanying information to include with the answers. Whenever we met in the church, the Curate was on hand to help with queries and her great enthusiasm was infectious.
The trail will be used by the school, other visiting schools plus individuals and organisations who use the facilities for various activities including sleepovers!
