GLAVEN VALLEY COMPLETE THEIR VILLAGE TRAIL OF BLAKENEY
8 Feb 2023
The Art Society Glaven Valley has developed a neighbourhood trail around the village of Blakeney detailing its fascinating history, ancient and modern.
Blakeney lies on the north Norfolk coast and is a picturesque village which attracts tourists, artists and birdwatchers year round. What many visitors do not know is that Blakeney has a log and interesting history. It was mentioned in the Doomsday Book and became an important, thriving port from medieval times until the beginning of the 20th Century. Sailors travelled as far away as Iceland from the 14th Century onwards to catch and salt cod for the UK market, even supplying the Royal Household. There are reputed to be 'smugglers' tunnels in the village and the village sign shows a fiddler and his dog who were reputed to enter one of the tunnels and were never seen again.
