Scampston Hall - the first of Driffield Wolds' visits for 2022
1 May 2022
A fully-booked visit to Scampston Hall, Park and Walled Garden was enjoyed by 31 of our members on 28th April.
Ours was the first organised tour at the Hall this year. Our members were treated to an extremely detailed and entertaining account of the history of the St. Quintins and Legards who built, redeveloped and occupied the Hall since the beginning.
Originally built in the early 17th Century, the hall was remodelled in the Regency style at the turn of the 19th century by Thomas Leverton. It was designed to sit harmoniously in the Capability Brown landscape.
Gainsborough was a close family friend and there is an unrivalled collection of his paintings in what is still a well-used family home.
Included in the visit was a quiche lunch in the newly-refurbished conservatory.
The photos were taken by members Phil Sainter, Peter Bernard and Jo Frend and by a conservatory volunteer.
