Synopses

24 February - "A Tale of Three Cities: Athens, Rome and Palmyra." Dr. Paul Roberts will look at the art, monuments and people of Athens in its golden age and give a fascinating insight into the life of Rome, the Eternal City. Finally, he will examine the meteoric rise and dramatic fall of the fabled city of Palmyra.

13 March - "Murderers, Magicians, Madmen and Monarchs: Skakespeare through Artists' Eyes." Vivien Heffernan will explore how over the past three centuries, Shakespeare's plays have provided artists with a wonderfully rich source of material. In order to bring the language to life, while we explore the paintings, an RSC actor will perform the relevant verses.

13 April - "Art and Revolution: the Life and Death of the Russian Avant-Garde." Rosamund Bartlett will show how, before the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace in 1917, Russian artists staged a daring revolution of their own and became leaders of the European avant-garde. Tragically, their dreams were extinguished under the harsh conditions of the Stalinist regime.
