Following the UK’s lockdown in March, portrait painter Tom Croft embarked on a pioneering initiative to capture the bravery of NHS frontline workers. On April 4, he posted a video on his Instagram account offering to paint an NHS key worker’s portrait for free. He invited other artists to do the same, using the hashtag #portraitsfornhsheroes, and was overwhelmed by the response. During the first two weeks of the project alone, he paired up 500 artists and NHS workers. Today, the hashtag #portraitsfornhsheroes has had over 14,000 posts. Published by Bloomsbury, Tom Croft’s book presents a selection of these portraits, created by artists from Alastair Adams to Mary Jane Ansell.
