The Arts Society awarded a grant to the City & Guilds of London Arts School to assist a student on their BA Conservation course, who would otherwise be unable to take up their place or continue their study for the academic year 2019/20.
The Arts Society Bursary at City & Guilds of London School of Art was awarded to Cody Cochrane, a student on the course BA (Hons) Conservation: Stone, Wood & Decorative Surfaces. Cody has just successfully completed a busy and exciting second year of her course where she focussed on stone, wood and decorative surfaces. Working with a colleague, Cody has worked on a variety of projects including Rochester Cathedral, Kensal Green Cemetery and St Agatha’s Church, Portsmouth where she used a variety of conservation skills including laser cleaning. A particular highlight of the year was working with plaster casts from the V&A collection and also gaining a 2.1 grade in chemistry of cleaning.
Whilst an internship in the V&A sculpture conservation studio had to be postponed because of the pandemic, Cody was able to complete a month long placement at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire where she was involved in the cleaning of 8 outdoor sculptures. In addition to this with her fellow second year students, she was involved in the environmental consultation at Gerry’s Pompeii, the extraordinary home of the late artist Gerard ‘Gerry’ Dalton. More recently Cody was commissioned to clean, repair and regild the Duchy of Lancaster’s crest at their headquarters at Waterloo Bridge, pictured here.
