How Did Our Gardens Grow? Martin Heard
A well-attended study day took place at Harrietsham Village Hall on the 4th March 2020.
Martin opened his lecture with a look at Tudor Gardens. He had lots of pictures, plans and paintings to add to the commentary.
He took us through the Tudor garden explaining how the designs were influenced by other gardens in Europe and beyond and on into the Stuart period. He showed how the gardens complimented the architecture of the houses and how the designers were often from gardening backgrounds but had the knowledge to put ideas forward to the owners, such as Chatsworth.
After lunch he talked of the Gardens of Versailles and the use of the water fountains which are still such an attraction.
He was kept for a long time both before lunch and at the end of the afternoon answering questions. His knowledge was extensive and he was eager to share it with those who expressed interest.
A very good day!
