Celebratory Lecture & Lunch Mark 50th Anniversary of The Arts Society

Nearly a hundred members and guests gathered at Solberge Hall Hotel on 3rd July for a lunch to celebrate 50 years of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies, now known as The Arts Society.

Prior to the lunch, Barry Venning gave a talk on Giles: his Life, Times and Cartoons. Carl Giles was best known for his work for the Daily Express and Sunday Express, which began in 1943 and ended in 1991.

Mr Venning showed a wealth of cartoons, many of which made references to news items, some even quoting actual news headlines from the previous day’s paper. The topics and humour were typically British and made references to common attitudes of the time.

Following a very enjoyable and light hearted lecture, the vote of thanks was given by David Darbyshire, who brought along an autographed cartoon that he had received as a boy from Giles.
