In January 1904 Edmund Blampied, a Jersey farmer’s boy aged 17, travelled to London to begin art school. Except for two-years’ service in the Jersey Militia towards the end of WWI, Blampied lived and worked in London for over 30 years. During that time he produced over 1,500 illustrations for magazines, designed the dust jackets for some 200 books, published 180 etchings and lithographs, and regularly exhibited paintings in London galleries. When he returned to Jersey in 1938, he said farewell to the city “which has supported me all these long years and has been my friend – my cell and my heaven in many ways”.
