Visit to Palma's Castillo de San Carlos

26 Mar 2026

A group of members gathered this week for a guided visit to the historic Castle of San Carlos, a coastal fortress that continues to stand as a symbol of Mallorca’s strategic and cultural legacy.

Overlooking the Bay of Palma near the ancient port of Porto Pi, the 17th-century stronghold was originally constructed to defend the island against pirate incursions and Berber raids. Its distinctive trapezoidal layout, reinforced with bastions at each corner, reflects centuries of military adaptation and architectural evolution, underscoring the island’s former role as a critical hub along Mediterranean trade routes.

Throughout its history, the fortress has served multiple purposes, from a defensive battery to a prison for military officers. Since 1981, it has housed a military museum, offering visitors insight into Spain’s naval and military past. Today, the site is managed by the Castillo de San Carlos Consortium and remains an important cultural landmark in Palma.

During the visit, participants explored both the historic structure and its artistic surroundings. Among the highlights were sculptural portraits of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, created by artist Lolo Garner. The group also viewed works displayed in the landscaped park area, including notable pieces by Joan Bennàssar, recognized for his expressive and often provocative nude sculptures.

Set against a backdrop of sweeping sea views, the visit offered attendees a layered experience combining history, architecture, and contemporary art — a reflection of the diverse heritage that defines Mallorca today.
