TAS Driffield Wolds co-sponsors Koestler Arts "Almost Home"
15 Jun 2025
The Arts Society Driffield Wolds were one of the co-sponsors of the Koestler Arts exhibition “Almost Home”, held recently at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.
Koestler Arts is the UK’s best known and oldest prison arts charity.
This exhibition was co-curated by six women serving sentences at HM Prison & Young Offender Institution Low Newton, and each piece on display was made by someone in a prison, young offender institution, secure hospital, or under supervision in the community entered into the 2024 Koestler Awards for arts in criminal justice settings.
TASDW Committee members Frances Gaskell and Megan Price attended the Baltic Centre to see the exhibition.
Fran and Megan were very impressed and moved by the standard of the submissions which ranged from musical compositions, match sculptures and painting. The narrative from the inmates’ work highlighted that going home raised complex thoughts, some of which weren’t positive. Visitors to the exhibition were encouraged to complete a form which would be passed on to the artists, giving feedback on their work which was a great way for them to experience the exhibition which they wouldn’t be able to see for themselves.
