STAMFORD BRIDGE TAPESTRY. A huge thankyou to Megan Price for organising such a fascinating visit and to the lovely people at The Old Station Club, Stamford Bridge for making us most welcome.
The scene was set by Club Chairman Brian Fulton who described the circumstances that led to the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066 and the consequences of it.
Display manager and embroiderer Ann Chatten then described the process of designing and producing the tapestry which took place over five years from 2016 with a team of 25. The project was proposed and headed by Tom Wyles who, sadly, did not live to see its completion. Rather than a continuous tapestry, the work is displayed in several panels, framed behind heavy-duty perspex to protect them. Woad and madder were among the locally grown plants used to produce natural dyes to be as authentic as possible and stitchwork replicates the original Bayeux tapestry. Apart from displaying great skill, there are also humerous touches - we were challenged to find the soldier with a mobile phone! Graphic designer Chris Rock is included as the warrior with spectacles! The panels include the iconic scene of the lone Viking holding the bridge against the English army until he was unmanned by a low blow. They had a term for it - brogging.......
