British Landscape Views of India with Arts Society accredited lecturer Prasannajit de Silva
British artists first travelled to India in the mid-eighteenth century, and views of the country remained a popular subject for numerous British artists, professional and amateur, throughout the period of the Empire. Their work encompassed both India’s natural scenery and its rich architectural heritage. But what were the issues facing artists from one culture engaged in portraying scenes from another? How was their work shaped by European aesthetic theories? And what was the impact back in Britain of the material they produced?
