The Art of Ancient Egypt
Lecturer: Lucia Gahlin

In venue (Winchester) and online via Zoom

The Art of Ancient Egypt with Arts Society accredited lecturer Lucia Gahlin

Ancient Egyptian art is appealing and instantly recognisable. In this study day we will explore the very particular way in which the ancient Egyptians chose to represent their world, and what they called ‘the other world’, in painting, relief and sculpture. We will examine what art meant to the ancient Egyptians, and where they chose to place it. Their principles of representation, style and proportioning were remarkably consistent for some 3000 years. In fact there was such a strict canon of art for the walls of temples and tombs that sketches and other informal pieces appear particularly striking. We will explore the materials and techniques of the Egyptian painters and sculptors, as we consider both their formal and informal works of art.
