The Study Day will explore the exciting new developments in the arts in Siena at the beginning of the 14th century, which herald the renaissance.

Sienese artists broke new ground with their innovative use of rich colour and increasing natural observation in the gestures and postures of the human figure in vibrant and magnificent altarpieces such as Duccio’s Maesta or the fascinating  fresco cycles by Simone Martini, and the Lorenzetti brothers, whose fame would spread to Assisi and Naples.

The exhibition will include other innovative Sienese artistic contributions in illuminated manuscripts, ivories, glass, rugs and silks.
