Open to the public since 1935 and internationally recognised as a premier museum and research centre, the Frick Collection provides one of the world’s foremost collections of European fine and decorative arts, with masterworks ranging from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century. The Frick was founded by the American industrialist Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919) who bequeathed his paintings, sculptures and decorative art collection along with his Gilded Age residence to the public for their enjoyment.
Robert Dunay
Robert Dunay BSc PhD FGS is a retired exploration geologist with a lifelong interest in art. Since retirement, Bob has focussed on American art and the art collections amassed by wealthy American collectors of the Gilded Age when America shed its rural roots and became the world’s industrial leader. His favourite museum has always been the Frick Collection, housed in the Frick Mansion on E 70th Street & 5th Avenue in New York City. As a native New Yorker, Bob discovered Frick’s magnificent collection in the 1960s has never ceased his visits there. His talk will begin with a brief history of the Gilded Age and Henry Clay Frick’s important, successful and controversial place in the development of American industrial predominance and wealth. A tour of the Mansion and the collection will follow accompanied by Bob’s research into the sources and costs of the now priceless paintings, most of which were accumulated from 1900 to 1919, the year of Frick’s death.
