Disability Discrimination

From October 2010 the Equality Act replaced most of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). However, provisions relating to the Disability Equality Duty in the DDA continue to apply.

Societies do have obligations under the Disability Equality Duty and should assess the venues they use with regard to ease of access and facilities for disabled individuals. It is suggested that any points of concern are discussed with the venue provider who should be encouraged to act responsibly.

Provided Societies can show that they have considered the issues involved and have taken reasonable measures to make their activities available to all their members, it appears unlikely that liability would attach to them via the Act.
