For our final visit of the year, we have planned a gentle day out that involves a short coach journey, short walking distances and a chance to discover two of Sussex's most enduring attractions or, if you have been there before, to see them from a new and different perspective.
Our first stop is Preston Manor, a magnificent Edwardian mansion just two miles from the centre of Brighton. Last owned and occupied by the wealthy Stanford family, it was bequeathed to Brighton Corporation in 1932 on condition that the house and its contents be preserved as a historic museum. The house has only recently reopened after a five-year closure for refurbishment. Now restored to its former glory, Preston Manor exudes the elegance, glamour and opulence of the Edwardian age and transports visitors back to 1912, the year the Titanic sank.
Our visit includes a self-guided tour of the house. Audio guides are provided free of charge.
This winter, Brighton's most dazzling landmark, the Royal Pavilion, will be at the heart of the city's festive celebrations. On 22 November, it will open a season filled with music, feasting, storytelling and sparkle and offer visitors a chance to step into a Christmas straight out of a period drama.
By the time of our visit, the building will already be dressed to host "A Very Austen Christmas" to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the nation's best-loved authors. Glittering trees, scented garlands, carols and playful costumed characters will bring the Royal Pavilion to life with the added charm of a Regency Christmas.
Our visit will include a guided tour, after which you are free to explore the palace at your own pace.
Please note that your tickets for Preston Manor and the Royal Pavilion are Annual Passes, which allow you to make an unlimited number of return visits for one year from the date of issue. The Royal Pavilion is open all year round, apart from Christmas and Boxing Day; Preston Manor closes for the winter season.
