The Spanish civil war ended with a dictatorship. Some artists stayed in Spain, others were forced to leave the country.
Many artists had to leave the country during the civil war or after the war during the dictatorship, many of these were women. Many went to countries like Mexico. A large group of women artists became surrealist painters.
