Join Andrew to learn how a visit to the National Portrait Gallery inspired an interest in locating their magnificent jewellery.
Inspired by a visit to the National Portrait Gallery, Andrew designed this talk after looking at the richly adorned Tudor, Stuart, and Hanoverian monarchs and wondering about the ultimate fate of their spectacular, ostentatious jewellery.
Instead of focusing purely on monetary worth, the presentation evaluates these items through their quality of design, social history, and craftsmanship. It unravels the dramatic journeys of lost, smuggled, and rediscovered historical treasures by tracking their appearances across centuries of portraiture.
The lecture explores significant historical pieces, including royal pearl strands and a remarkable diamond with a provenance spanning the English Civil War, the French Revolution, and 20th-century British society.
