Commemorating people and events & current controversy.
Cities are centres of public commemoration and a principal location for monuments, statues and other forms of memorial commemorating people and events deemed important to a particular society’s identity or history. As recent events have shown, these choices are controversial and defacing and toppling memorials is not unknown.

THE ARTS SOCIETY ACCREDITED LECTURER
Dr Matt Wates
I was born in London in 1964. Having worked professionally as a musician for some 30 years, I decided in 2009 to go back to college and pursue my other abiding interest, the history of art. I subsequently received my BA (First Class Honours) and MA (Distinction) from Birkbeck College, and my PhD from Bristol University, where I have been teaching the subject for the last five years. My book on the work of Anselm Kiefer, Disorders at the Borders, was published by Peter Lang Ltd in 2021.
