During the course of the day, three sessions will look at how social upheaval, war and technological advances transformed our houses. Following welcome refreshments at 10.30am, the first lecture at 11am, ‘ All Clutter and Plush?’ 1880-1914, will cover the late Victorian and Edwardian era including furnishings of the Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts Movement. After a 15 minute comfort break, the second lecture at 12.15pm, ‘Armistice to Austerity’ 1920-1950, will cover the impact of two world wars, the depression and enormous upheaval, along with Arts Deco and Modernism. Lunch with soft drinks will be served at 1.15pm. At 2.15 pm, the third lecture, ‘Space age and Psychedelia’ 1950-1980' will look at how Marley tiles and Formica transformed kitchens, along with the explosion of imaginative and colourful design including shagpile carpets and avocado bathrooms. The day will finish by looking at trends since 1980, and contemplate what might come next. At 3.30 pm there will be a Question Session and the day will end at 4pm.
