TAS Driffield Wolds take a guided tour of Hull's Maritime History

12 Oct 2026

On 8th October on a crisp bright morning, members of TASDW joined a walking tour of Hull's Old Town with Maritime Museum volunteer Justine Hunt.

We were amazed to find just how much history there was for the much-maligned and overlooked city of Hull.

Following the lines of the original city's walls, we learned of the incident that sparked the English Civil War, the burgeoning of Hanseatic trade, the end of the slave trade, the creation of the enormous docks with their splendid merchant house and warehouses, and the vast flow of migrants, many on their way to the New World. Then there was the immense damage done in the Second World War, decline of the huge fishing fleet and subsequent redevelopment including the Renewables industry with its off-shore wind turbines, the marina and the magnificent refurbishment of the Maritime Museum and Queen"s Garden.

The photos show the exterior of Maritime Museum, the impressive footbridge commemorating Hull's first woman GP Dr Mary Charlotte Murdoch, the upstairs courtroom at the Maritime Museum, the aquarium The Deep and attendant Millenium Footbridge with Icelandic sculpture Voyage in the foreground and the innovative flood barrier beyond and, finally, the restored Queen's Gardens with Ton Lui's "Solar Gate".
