With their coastal shades and hushed designs, London-based weaver Christabel Balfour makes tapestries that sigh with calm.
Since graduating from Ruskin School of Fine Art five years ago, Christabel has made a name for herself producing large rugs and wall hangings, working on an enormous 1976 Harris floor loom and a 1992 Don Porritt loom, both of which she restored and assembled herself.
This ancient process is a slow one: a labour of weeks and months, set against the hurry of a fast-everything society. It is a deeply meditative process. ‘My designs are inspired by the natural world,’ Christabel tells us. ‘They’re a way to clear some open space and distance amid the intensity of modern living.’
