Thirteen ASM members and guests brightened up a rainy January day exploring Soller’s Can Prunera with the very knowledgeable tour guide Quico Maura. The mansion was built by the Mallorcan / French Magraner family between 1909 and 1911. With its original furnishings, colorful hydraulic floor tiles and its sculpture garden, the house is an excellent example of “Modernista” design– the Catalan version of Art Nouveau. Three floors now showcase one of the island’s best collections of 19th and 20th century paintings, sculpture and graphics. Toulouse-Lautrec, Klee, Rusiñol, Picasso, Barceló, Ramis and many others are well-represented, thanks to the Serra Art Foundation. The mansion’s top floor hosts an art activities space for children and families.
While Art may be food for the soul, it did not slake the group’s appetite for a good lunch. This was enjoyed at the Modernista-style La Vila hotel and restaurant on Soller’s central square.
